Papa Bear & Boy: What Can I Be?
It's my dad's birthday today so I want to share something I've held onto for a while now. I came up with the concept for Papa Bear & Boy in June 2021, just a couple of months before my dad, John Kelly, passed away. That year, my dad and I grew a large audience online by sharing our funny dynamic—ranging from pranks to heartfelt moments that showed love and inspired other dads and sons to grow closer.
My dad was like the human version of a bear—strong, protective, and gruff when he needed to be. I was the silly kid with a stick, always poking him with pranks to make him laugh. Of course, this was mostly for the fans. In reality, it was often the other way around; he loved to prank me, and in the process, he gave me my sense of humor.
Growing up with my dad, I learned countless valuable lessons. When he passed away in August of 2021, one of the ways I coped with the loss was by creating art. That’s when I completed this book, Papa Bear & Boy. For the past three years, I’ve held onto it, keeping it close to my heart. Today, on his birthday, I feel it’s the perfect time to share one of the most valuable lessons I learned from him. This book is my tribute to the love, laughter, and lessons that shaped me—and I hope it brings others the same joy and inspiration he brought to my life. Happy birthday pops, I love you always.
